Would you like to learn an ancient art form?
Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts
Foci is dedicated to the education and exhibition of art glass. It began in Ohio in 1999 after brothers Michael and Scott Boyd opened a glass art studio on their parents’ farm. Michael moved Foci to Minnesota three years later. Today, it’s the state’s only nonprofit public access community glass studio and education center.
There are several classes, including Glassblowing 1. Held on Tuesdays, this session introduces the medium of molten glass. Using a standard set of tools, students create solid and blown glass while also learning how to work with a partner.
The Goddess of Glass
Nestled in the Victory neighborhood, The Goddess of Glass is owned by award-winning artist Connie Beckers. Connie began her career in 1995 after completing an introductory stained glass class through Minnesota Community Education. She made her television debut on the DIY network’s I Hate My Kitchen when she was asked to create a glass tile backsplash for a kitchen makeover.
The Goddess offers over 20 different classes, including Glass Fusing. During this session, students “paint” on a canvas of clear glass using different shapes of colored glass. Their projects are then fused in a kiln for 12 hours and ready for pick-up the following week.
Vandalia Glassworks is an independent studio that welcomes everyone from first-time glassblowers to professional artists. It features both a hot shop and cold shop, and students enjoy a hands-on experience using centuries-old techniques.
Beginners start by making paperweights. The furnace reaches temperatures of over 2000 degrees, and the instructors help everyone manipulate the glass and form it into simple shapes.
